Diagnosis could be challenging therefore, detailed history of early toothache and facial swelling in addition to central nervous system (CNS) signs could be a pointer to an odontogenic cause. We report a case of cerebral abscess resulting from pericoronitis of impacted left maxillary third molar in an 18-year male with positive history of substance abuse.</p> <p><strong>Case description:</strong> An unconscious 18-year-old male adolescent with a history of toothache, facial swelling, fever, vomiting, seizures presented in our accident and emergency. Clinical and radiological examination revealed an impacted left maxillary third molar tooth, sinusitis and cerebral abscess. Patient succumbed to the disease during intracranial drainage and removal of offending tooth.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Oral examination is a very important step whenever cerebral abscess is suspected or diagnosed. Removal of the primary odontogenic cause should be an integral part of the overall management in a multidisciplinary setting like ours.</p> Samuel Gbenga ADETUNJI Samuel Gbenga ADETUNJI Anthony Osemwegie OSAGUONA Copyright (c) 2022 Nigerian Journal of Research in Orofacial Infections & Oncology 2022-05-08 2022-05-08 4 1&2 1 5 Nigerian Dentists Knowledge and Compliance with Changes in Infection Prevention and Control Protocols for Dental Treatment in the Covid-19 Era. https://publications.nomiot.com.ng/index.php/njroio/article/view/118 <p><strong>Objective: </strong>To assess the knowledge, practice changes and level of compliance of dentists in Nigeria regarding infection prevention and control (IPC) measures required for dental treatment in the Covid-19 era.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> This study was part of a national descriptive online survey conducted using google platforms. Information on socio-demographics, knowledge, management practices, access to dental care and willingness to treat patients during the COVID-19 pandemic were obtained using a 32 item validated self administered questionnaire. Chi-square test was used to determine the association between categorical variables.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> A total of 327 dentists in public (78.9%) and private (21.1%) owned clinics in 6 geopolitical zones of the country participated in the survey with a mean age of 39.9± 9.8 years.</p> <p>The overall level of knowledge of COVID19-related IPC measures when managing dental patients was good (84.1%). However, knowledge of critical aspects of IPC such as appropriate use of personal protective equipment, was not optimal. Similarly, there were several changes in management practices for dental conditions by dentists but compliance levels with IPC protocols were poor (59.3%). &nbsp;There was a significant association between knowledge and level of compliance with IPC practices.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> &nbsp;There was a good level of knowledge of IPC protocols and the attendant changes arising from the COVID19 pandemic among Nigerian Dentists, however, the compliance level to these IPC measures was poor. Also, knowledge was less than optimum in some aspect. Considering the high infectivity of the virus, there is a need to continuously educate dentists on all aspects of IPC against this very contagious disease to guarantee personnel and patient safety.</p> Omolara G. It is the most common oral benign tumour. It is mesodermal in origin and has characteristic pink, red or white, and knob-like appearance. It is painless and could present as sessile or pedunculated lesion. Objective of the study was to present the pattern of occurrence and treatment of irritation fibroma occurring in the oro-facial region in our Centre.</p> <p>Methods: This study was a retrospective analysis of cases of irritation fibroma treated at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna, Nigeria. The period of study spanned from January 2010 to December 2020. Information was collected from the records of the patient and these include: age, gender, aetiology, duration of tumour, location, therapy and histology.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Thirty-nine cases were seen. Males were 14 and female 25. The tongue was most affected (n=15, 38.5%), then the buccal mucosa (n=13, 33.3%), gingivae (n=7, 17.9%), cheek (n=2, 5.1%), nose (n=1, 2.6%) and forehead (n=1, 2.6%).
