Unusual Presentation of Mandibular Reconstruction Plate Exposure: A Case Report

Abstract

The efficacy of mandibular reconstruction plate has been improved with the use of titanium which provides better tissue integration, and the use of locking screw which facilitates biomechanical enhancement. Despite these novel improvements, this technique is not without its own challenges. Plate exposure is one of the main challenges associated with mandibular reconstruction plate. The objective of this report was to present an unusual presentation of mandibular reconstruction plate exposure seen in our Centre. Several risk factors such as infection have been implicated in plate exposure and detachment. Improved surgical techniques and postoperative care are ways of reducing the risk of plate exposure.
